WATCH YOUR MOUTH, PAKATAN HARAPAN LEADERS IN MALAYA TOLD WATCH YOUR MOUTH, PAKATAN HARAPAN LEADERS IN MALAYA TOLD

JO-ANNA RAMPAS

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah has reiterated that there is no co-operation between the party and Parti Peribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) or Perikatan Nasional (PN) to ensure Muhyiddin Yasin remains as the Prime Minister.

Wirawati deputy Chief, Jo-Anna Sue Henley Rampas said there is no reason for Warisan to work together with PN or PPBM since the latter had caused a lot of difficulty for Warisan.

β€œFirstly, PPBM backtracked on its pledge not to set up its branch in Sabah and secondly, right after the collapse of the PH Government in February, it pressured Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Shafie Apdal and other party leaders incessantly to submit to PN.

β€œThe grand finale was their devious and cowardly failed attempt to topple the Warisan-Plus Sabah Government last July,” Jo-Anna said in a statement on Sunday in response to questions on the current political developments.

β€œSo if there is anyone who would be happy to see Muhyiddin have a taste of his own medicine, it will be Warisan-Plus. Hence, my advice to national PH leaders who never went through what Warisan did but is now suddenly accusing us of aligning with PN is – to better watch their mouth,” she added.

SHAFIE APDAL
Jo-anna said the exemplary commitment and dignity displayed by Warisan MPs under the leadership of Shafie in Parliament allowed them to settle several crucial issues relating to Sabah.

β€œLast Thursday, during the Committee Stage debate on the Supply Bill 2021 Warisan MPs voted for the motion tabled by Upko, because firstly, Warisan MPs are under moral obligation to vote on motions relating to Sabah and secondly, Upko is steadfast in preserving its existing co-operation with Warisan.

And during the policy level debate on the Supply Bill 2021, Warisan MPs delivered two crucial improvements to the Bill namely an increase of Covid-19 allocation by another RM50 million and a review of the Elaun Perumahan Wilayah (EPW) for Sabahan officials working for the Federal Government in Putrajaya, both of which were then included in the Bill.

So the question of Warisan MPs not doing their job for Sabah is grossly misleading and the question that Sabahans should ask instead is β€œwhat did GRS MPs contribute to Sabah in that Supply Bill?” she added.

Jo-Anna said that Warisan will continue its political co-operation with PH and other opposition parties but reiterated the need for a credible and principled Opposition Leader.

β€œWarisan believes that the key to winning the upcoming general election is firstly to unite all Malaysians irrespective of their race and religion and to come out with a clear definition of β€œBangsa Malaysia”. Thereafter, to come out with a new deal on social and economic ownerships for these are the issues that cause us to be polarised in the first place.

β€œWe still honour the political pact between Warisan and PH/Upko but our concern is the lack of credibility on the part of Opposition Leader, Anwar Ibrahim and his capability to deliver which may cause PH voters to finally feel disillusioned.

β€œWarisan cannot continue to allow itself to be used for someone else’s personal agendas that have no benefit at all to Sabah. As a matter of principle, it is only apt that the party makes its stand known now and not when the election is around the corner,” she added.

TIBA MASA PEMIMPIN MUDA TAMPIL KUKUHKAN PEMBANGKANG

Kelmarin, dua pemimpin pemuda iaitu Ketua Pemuda Amanah, Shazni Munir Mohd.

RECOGNISE CHILD MARRIAGE AS A HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION SABAH GOVT URGED

http://bit.ly/37Y1vbc

By JANNIE LASIMBANG

COMMENT: Human Rights Day is commemorated on 10 December every year, the date on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Hence it is appropriate to mark Human Rights Day this year as a commitment by the government to end child marriage.

Child marriage is a violation of human rights and is prohibited by a number of international conventions and other instruments. If we don’t stop child marriages, it is estimated that in the next ten years more than 100 million girls are likely to be married before the age of 18.

JANNIE LASIMBANG

Child marriage is not acceptable and it should be avoided as it can affect the child’s rights to education, reproductive health and mental health. We need to stand up for our rights and promote relativenss of all human beings.

I strongly urge the GRS governments to make a strong statement against child marriage, and implement the 10-Year Plan to End Child Marriage in Sabah which the Ministry of Law and Native Affairs has adopted with the support of UNICEF Malaysia.

According to the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, a total of 1,856 underage marriages recorded across Malaysia this year. Sabah has the third highest Muslim child marriages with 63 child marriages in the first nine months of this year.

There were 543 child marriages including applications recorded nationwide so far this year involving Muslims were from Sabah, making it the third highest after Sarawak 83 and Kelantan 80. As for non-Muslim couples, the ministry said the National Registration Department’s records showed 23 underage marriages recorded from January to September 2020.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) states that men and women of full age are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending parties.

This poster is based on a study on Child Marriages by PACOS Trust in 5 districts.

The Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for Marriage and Registration of Marriages (1964) says that no marriage shall be legally entered into without the full and free consent of both parties. States should specify a minimum age for marriage (not less than 15 years) and all marriages should be registered by the competent authority.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination of Women (1979), which Malaysia has ratified, states that the betrothal and the marriage of a child shall have no legal effect, and all necessary action, including legislation, should be taken to specify a minimum age for marriage and to make the registration of marriages in an official registry compulsory.

In their general recommendations of 1994, the Committee considers that the minimum age for marriage should be 18 years for both men and women.
